  • Malaya Blue's On The Radio 19/11/15

Malaya Blue, one of the standout performers in British Blues this year, joined Richard Dunning on Blues On The Radio before her showcase performance at The Tuesday Night Music Club this week. As well as Malalaya, today's Track Of The Day also includes King King (pictured), Walter Trout and Half Deaf Clatch!

  • When Bands & Small Venues Rocked! 26/11/15

"Yet another from 'LLSTW' - the storming 'I'd Rather Die In Vain' - gave us a full house on the genre bingo card - Jimi's Blue Plaque just up the road in W1 was no doubt reverberating to this nod to his legend. It was then back to the Blues and to their 'Love Vol. 1' EP and 'What's On Your Mind' - a track that not only JD has performed before using Duanne Allman's Les Paul but also many would think is a Blues standard and a cover. Praise indeed. The 'Big Country' style opening riff of 'Long May You Sail' lead into another SIMO epic from 'LLSTW' and a bonus ball with Progressive rock overtones - the togetherness of this three-piece never being more apparent now than during their entire set. The prog flag continued to fly with 'Off at 11' again from 'Love Vol. 1' plus I suppose the obligatory but great drum solo from Abrashoff. There's no doubt that JD's voice has a certain 'Cocker' about it - so the opening guitar salvo to 'With a Little Help From My Friends' made the proverbial hairs on the back of the neck stand up. This necessitated banter later as to what was the better cover - Janis or Joe? One thing for sure was that SIMO nailed it! And there was room from one encore - 'Evil' from their first self-titled album - doffing their caps to Zep with its 'How Many More Times' type riff which - par for the course - proceeded into a jam - but rounded off a wonderful evening that transported us back in time - when bands and small venues rocked. Given the forthcoming release of "LLSTW' - you have to question whether we will ever be able to witness this intimacy again." Read the rest of AJ's SIMO review here or go to our photo gallery here.

  • Mountain Time! 16/11/15

This legendary power-rock band made its electrifying debut at Woodstock, in the summer of 1969. Thirty-five years and millions of album sales later, the line up still included the whiskeyvoiced singer/guitarist, Leslie West, and the incomparable Corky Laing on drums when the WRC saw them at the Mick Jagger Centre, Dartford, in 2005. Another ten years down the line, and with West doing his own thing (watch out for news of a new CD release later this week), we're at the iconic 100 Club in London to see "Corky Laing plays Mountain" supported by our buddies The Rainbreakers and Born Healer. Watch out for a review and more of John Bull's pics over the next few days - but in the meantime take a look at our Vid Of The Day recorded last night.

  • Cafe Culture! 28/10/15

The first time we saw Joanne Shaw Taylor was supporting Black Country Communion at the Shepherds Bush Empire at the end of 2010. Unlike BCC Joanne has obviously gone from strength to strength since! In May 2011 we saw her headline for the first time at the O2 Islington in May 2011 but admittedly missed her set at Ramblin' Man - hence our visit to the Jazz Cafe, Camden, last night for the second gig of her two night residency. Watch this space for a review and more pics - but in the meantime have a look at today's Vid Of The Day - taken live last night!

  • The Maine Event! 15 September 2015

For a professional touring musician, it sounds like a recipe for disaster. You and your bandmates pile into a bus for a nationwide tour, but almost everywhere you go, nobody pays a dime to get into your shows. You have no corporate sponsor. No record label picking up the tab. Most nights, you don't sell a single ticket. Instead of theatres or clubs, The Maine, a rock band from Arizona and our Vid Of The Day will play non-traditional venues such as shopping malls and parking lots. And to save money, they'll sleep on their tour bus! But that's exactly what the guys have signed up for by launching a free, 26-city tour that stops off at the House of Blues in Orlando this Saturday and our very own Wrinkly (Colin) will be there! And not content with getting a freebie he intends pestering the guys for an interview to see how the tour is going – who knows this could be the way forward for bands in the UK as well? If anyone has any questions they would like Colin to ask them just e-mail us at wrinklyrockers11@aol.com Keep Music Live – and free it would seem!!

  • The Empire Strikes Back! 11 September 2015

"I could only sit there and marvel at the dexterity and marvellous interplay between the drummers, overseen like some sort of musical bank manager by Robert Fripp. If you closed your eyes you’d never know there were three players such is their cohesion. With Rieflin also playing the mellotron, the trio was frequently given a chance to shine with extended percussion-only interludes Not one word was spoken to the audience all evening by any band member by the way. This felt like some sort of classic orchestral performance. The ‘congregation’ (as this was clearly a religious experience for many attending) were totally entranced for the most part as the music demanded." • Larry Miller Update 3 September 2015

The WRC were delighted to receive the folowing update on Larry: "Larry has made a big improvement. He's now walking normally and he even ran down the hospital corridor !!! He can move his right hand and each of his fingers. Larry is in much better spirits and reading. He's received many cards in the post and over a thousand facebook and e-mail messages. His rehabilitation will take sometime but there is now hope that he can come back and do what he loves doing best. Thank you to everybody for your continued support. It makes Larry stronger everyday." The WRC would also like to congratulate Larry's bass player Derek White (pictured with Larry at Bluesfest in 2013) for being nominated for the second year running in the bass section of the British Blues Awards after coming runner up last year.

  • Canadian Roots And All! 26 August 2015

Our thanks to Matt from Savage Gringo for our invite to take in this year's winners of the Canadian Junos Roots & Traditional Album award - The Bros. Landreth - at The Borderline last night. This European debut show followed the release of their awesome11-song debut 'Let It Lie'. So did the album's bluesy wail of electric guitars, the swell of B3 organ, and the blood harmonies of brothers Joey and David Landreth come across as well live in the flesh? A review and more pics to follow but in the meantime have a gander at our Vid Of The Day!

  • All Aboard The Midnight Blues Train! 19 August 2015

Further to the news of the impending despatch of new WRC cards - we were delighted to receive another membership application from Pete Lovett of Powerhouse Blues Rockers Midnight Blues Train. MBT were actually showcased in our 'Introducing .....' feature here in March 2015 but Pete, who now lives in Plymouth, tells us he has many, many happy memories of attending gigs at The Red Lion in Northfleet and is absolutely staggered that Terry Lee still runs the place!! Pete added that he was also introduced to the WRC by his buddy Keith Howe of Blacktop Deluxe and they're hoping that the 'Tops' and Midnight Blues Train can organise a 'double header' very soon - and promises to get a video to us to prove it. No need for that Pete - we will be there mate!
