  • Same Old Shit ... Different Day 30/3/16

"Therefore, it was with a mix of personal emotion that we roared when Puddle Of Mudd opened ironically with 'Drift & Die' - Scantlin now being the only 'original' as he grimaced with his delivery and appeared to hold on to his microphone stand for dear life. Despite concern for Wes' well-being - the crowd were of course ecstatic - the POM roster now completed with guitarist Matt Fuller (ex-Bow Wow Wow), drummer Dave Moreno and bassist Michael John Adams - who were for the time being bit-parts as the audience were transfixed on Scantlin as they launched into - would you believe it - 'Psycho'. The evening had become a bit like a boxing match - the crowd willing Wes on after every round and it has the desired effect as they moved on to 'Control' (don't you love the apt song titles) which as usual was entwined with Sabbath's 'War Pigs' which Wes appeared to relish. Scantlin was sort of on a roll now as he dedicated 'Nothing Left To Lose' to his old sparring partner Fred Durst - enough for us to relax for a bit and appreciate Fuller's riff on this classic from 'Life On Display'." • Big Boy Bloater & The LiMiTs Tour 8/2/16

Big Boy Bloater and The LiMiTs will be releasing their new album 'Luxury Hobo' on Provogue/ Mascot Label Group on Friday 26th February. The band will then be hitting the road for the 'Luxury Hobo' tour from Sunday 8th May including a show at the iconic 100 Club in London on Sunday 15th May. With a fascination for textures and subtle narratives 'LH' sees Bloater in a tougher, deeper and more expressive mode following a bout of depression in 2013 which has led it to take a lot darker and personal tone. His Tom Waits-esque gravelly vocal delivery, coupled with the distinctive and dynamic guitar style has seen him build on the Blues foundation offering insights into rockier territories, aided and abetted with his ability to weave story-telling around barbed observations.

Well said Mike - backed up by Phil Lee who added "An excellent band, fully willing and capable of taking up the torch of rock and carrying if forward to a new generation. The most inspired I've been by a fresh band in decades!" Consequently Motion Device and their track 'Thick Skin' are our Vid Of The Day!

  • Billy Walton Band Currently Touring UK 22/1/16

Newly named in the 2015 British Blues Awards in the top three of the Overseas Artist category, New Jersey's Billy Walton Band (photo: Amber Charach) tour of the UK started on Wednesday and ends on Tuesday 2nd February at The Beaverwood Club in Chislehurst, Kent. Their recent album 'Wish For What You Want' on Vizztone Records won the band new critical acclaim and memorable reviews - their sound a combination of hard, funky Blues reminiscent of Hendrix, Clapton and Vaughan. As guitarist with the legendary group Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Billy Walton recorded with Little Steven and jammed with Jon Bon Jovi. Billy has sat in with numerous rock luminaries including Bruce Springsteen, Gary U.S. Bonds, and Stevie Ray Vaughan's band, Double Trouble. The full, six-piece touring band comprises Billy, bassist William Paris, Tom Petracarro on sax, Matt Fischer on trombone, drummer Johnny D'Angelo, and Sam Sherman on keyboards. A new live album is imminent and a new studio album is in the works.

  • RIP Lemmy - The Ace Of Heavy Metal Spades! 30/12/15

Lemmy, who has died aged 70 after being diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of cancer last week, was the front man and only constant member of Motorhead, one of the loudest bands in rock music. He was also something of a rock legend, his mutton-chop whiskers, facial wart and high microphone position making him one of the most recognisable figures in the business. There was also his obsession with slot machines, and his collection of Nazi memorabilia, which endeared him to diehards and casual fans alike. He is credited with introducing punk sounds into the heavy metal mix, paving the way for a generation of thrash metal and speed metal followers. In 1972 he was recruited as bassist for the space-rock band Hawkwind, despite having played only rhythm guitar before. He also sang lead vocals on the band's biggest hit, ‘Silver Machine’ (Vid Of The Day), which reached No. 3 in the UK charts, after a previous effort by the band's usual vocalist was deemed too weak. Lemmy's tenure with Hawkwind ended abruptly when he was busted for drug possession on a tour of Canada. In 1975, Lemmy decided to form his own band, "so that no-one can fire me again", and adopted the name Bastard, until it was gently pointed out that he would be unlikely to get a gig on Top of the Pops. Instead he changed it to Motorhead, US slang for someone who takes speed and also the title of the last song he had penned for Hawkwind. Lemmy's guttural vocals appealed to the fans and the punk influences in their blistering music tapped into the fast-changing music scene in the UK. Indeed Motorhead collaborated with punk outfit The Damned on a few occasions. It marked the start of the band's most successful period, which peaked with the release of their fourth album, ‘Ace of Spades’, in 1980. The thunderous title track became the band's definitive anthem and appearances on Top of the Pops helped it stay in the UK charts for 12 weeks!! During the following three decades the band released no fewer than 17 further albums, the last one being ‘Bad Magic’ in August 2015. One of the band's last performances was a storming set at Glastonbury earlier this year. The WRC were fortunate to see them at British Summer Time in Hyde Park (pictured) last year... So glad we did now. Lemmy's appetite for drugs and alcohol remained a constant throughout most of his career. He famously once claimed he had drunken a bottle of Jack Daniel’s every day since turning 30, slept with over 1,000 women and he was also a proponent of amphetamines. Recently, he joked that he had switched from drinking whiskey and coke to vodka and orange for “health reasons” to combat his diabetes!! But even though he once thought he was indestructible, sadly that hasn't proved to be the case as death has proved to be the only thing keeping him from playing music... So in summary, for me, Lemmy's voice and the sound of the bass guitar was exactly the same. It was a fantastic bluff gruffness which is so attractive, so hypnotic that it's a really great sound... It's a mistake to say it's just a noise because he wrote really good songs. Rest In Noise Lemmy. You truly deserve your place in Rock and Roll's Hall of Fame.. And now everyone please play Motorhead loud and have a drink or few .......... It's farewell to one of the greats. Wrinkly the Silver

Just a year after running away with our 2014 WRC 'Best Blues Performance' award - Chantel McGregor (pictured on our 2016 WRC Calendar) has scooped this year's 'Best Acoustic' WRC award. Beating off strong competition from both Ryan Bingham (who we saw at The Borderline in February) and Ben Poole - Chantel's memorable acoustic intro at BluesRockFest in July in the end won the day. So our Vid Of The Day has to be part of that set - and you can still purchase the official 2015 BluesRockFest DVD/CD here for a bargain £10 + p&p featuring both two video and two audio tracks from each of the six artists that appeared on that Summer's day.
