Appropriately the cream of Rock turned out last night at London's Hammersmith Eventim Apollo - a tribute to Peter Edward 'Ginger' Baker - a one-time only concert from Eric Clapton to celebrate the musical life of his dear friend. The set list for the concert honoured Baker's lifetime in music and included Clapton and Baker's work together in Cream and Blind Faith. Cue performances from Paul Carrack, Steve Winwood, Roger Waters, Nile Rodgers, Ronnie Wood, Kofi Baker, Kenney Jones and Will Johns, amongst others, in a fitting tribute, that was also in aid of Leonard Cheshire, a charity close to the Baker family, that offers life changing support to disabled people around the world.

"The opener kicks off with ‘Love Finds The Young And Old’, a mid-pace Blues rocker, which has a Bon Jovi anthemic feel about it, leads us to a quick genre switch with song two, ‘Web Of The Stranger’, the Bond themed number that Nikki adopts Shirley Bassey style phasing. In at three - ‘For Better For Worse’ - eases us in like a Sunday morning with a Blues ballad, where Nikki reaches for her heartfelt inner Janis (yes, Joplin) backed smoothly by Been’s sensitive piano pieces. So, we move swiftly on to what I’m calling the top number of album! ‘Don’t Trudge Mud In The House of Love’ - a title Seasick Steve would easily accommodate - with this deep down and dirty Blues rocker that should be top of every Blues DJ’s playlist -end of!" "Everything has moved up several notches here - the writing, the playing, the mood, the singing and the production all sound like the proud work of a young man taking his first steps into greatness rather than a precocious boy who’s been studying SRV in his bedroom. The feel of it puts me in mind of John Mayer’s ‘Heavier Things’ - a laid back vibe of Blues-but-not-Blues where the songs are given space to shine and subtle shades of brass pop up here and there for colour. It’s interesting how brass is used on this EP, sometimes it’s way in your face like on Gary Moore’s ‘Back To The Blues’ album and other times it’s more in laid back Miles Davis ‘Blue In Green’ territory. Whoever arranged it has done a fine job. That’s not to say Felix has put that Strat back in the case - the subject of death makes a return on the slow burner called, um, ‘Death’ where Felix gets all Gary Moore on yo’ ass, accompanied by those mournful muted trumpets." "The legendary Ginger Baker, now 78 years young, returned to his home city last Tuesday night - albeit North of the Thames for this Lewisham lad. Baker, of course made his big break as a the inspirational drummer and founder of Cream and played with them from 1966 until they disbanded in 1968. Fifty years later Ginger was back tubthumping at Camden's Jazz Cafe, with his three Jazz amigos, namely percussionist Abass Dodoo (from Edmonton not Ghana), saxophonist Pee Wee Willis and on double bass and guitar Alec Dankworth (pictured). Unfortunately due to Ginger's well-documented health problems, it was quality rather than quantity including 'Ginger Spice', 'Cyril Davies' and 'Aïn Témouchent' - but the legends's anecdotes more than made up for the short setlist." That was the last time we saw Cream's Ginger Baker play in April 2018 (pictured) and following the iconic drummer's death at the age of 80 at the beginning of October last year, Eric Clapton & Friends - a tribute to Baker - takes place at London's Hammersmith Eventim Apollo tonight.

Crown Lands are a really exciting powerhouse Rock duo hailing from Canada, and last Friday they released the video for their single ’Spit It Out’ (today's Track Of The Day), which is their first major label release and is the first taste of what’s to come from their forthcoming self-titled debut album. Crown Lands are Kevin Comeau (guitar, bass and keys) and Cody Bowles (vocals and drums), and together they bring a range of influences from Folk and Blues to Psychedelic to Prog and Rock. Drawing on their own intense personal chemistry, they are certainly creating something unique and fresh. Whilst only a two piece, their live presence is huge and their energetic shows have landing opening slots for major Rock acts like Jack White, Primus and Rival Sons. This May the band join Grammy award-nominated sister duo Larkin Poe on their European tour as support.

The last time we saw British Blues Award winners Catfish, or more precisely half a Cattfish, was when we saw Matt and Paul Long jamming with Walter Trout at London's Under The Bridge in October 2017. Well tonight, Matt & The Revenant Ones are appearing at The Star Inn in Guildford supported by NWOCR's Voodoo Lake, consisting of Dave Strange, Mark Bomber Randon and James Fileman, who we first introduced to you in December 2018.

"The Saiichi Sugiyama band took to the stage next, and showed that their take on classic British Blues Rock, which pulls in some intriguing influences including Cream, Motown and Stevie Wonder, has a significant upbeat, danceable side, as the Down & Outs and friends continued to take to the floor." That was part of our take on Saiichi Sugiyama at St. Paddy's Blues at the much missed Proud nearly four years ago (pictured and Video Of The Day), and Sugiyama returns to Camden tonight at The Green Note, accompanied by a mouthwatering line up that also includes Connor Selby, John O’Leary and Eddie Angel.

Electric Enemy recently released their latest single ‘Save Me’ (today's Track Of The Day), having enjoyed success with their debut ‘Climb’, which included features across Amazon and Spotify playlists and a personal invitation to open the Isle Of Wight Festival in 2019. They are a London-based band making music that you can’t help but be hooked by, with their driving guitar riffs met by perfectly crafted melodies, delivering a grown-up sound that cuts through the noise. The band have been busy in the studio working on their debut album with producer Sam Miller (Paloma Faith, Razorlight) and the collection of songs take the listener on a journey through Alternative Rock, Indie Pop and with more than one nod to an Electro-Pop sound that is playful in all the right places. Check them out at their two up and coming London gigs at The Waiting Room on Thursday 27th February, with The Hubbards as support, and then The Fiddler’s Elbow on Thursday 5th March.

Following last night's pre-show party at the incredible HMV Vault in Birmingham, with Secrets of Mariana, Enquire Within and Flex Bison all performing live, the HRH Metal IV weekend kicks off up the road at the O2 Academy today. Meanwhile, Amigo The Devil (Video Of The Day) continues his first ever UK/ROI and European tour as he stops off at London' Hoxton Hall tonight, to promote his acclaimed Ross Robinson produced 2019 debut album, ‘Everything Is Fine’. Also today, Guy Tortora (Track Of The Day) hits the Blues At Barleylands stage at 2pm, at Barleylands Social Club, Barleylands Road, Billericay CM11 2UF, whilst later, Classic Rock covers band Thickcut will be performing live at 8.30pm at The Butler, Chatham Street in Reading. Finally tonight at London's ULU Live, Student Central, Metalcore band, Unearth, has a sound that will attack you with fists of furry!

"So all in all a nice listen, with Innes’ compositions faring best to these ears after the first few auditions, and definitely a band that I’ll hope to hear in a live setting (the album launch gig will be at the Boom Boom Club in Sutton on Saturday 15th February)."
