In January 2023, Emma Wilson visited Memphis to meet with her distribution company, Select-O-Hits, and its owner, Johnny Phillips. Phillips shared exciting news: the Sam Phillips Recording Studio, now owned by Sam’s son Jerry, had acquired the original STAX console, and he urged Wilson to make a new album there. The result was 'Memphis Calling', a powerful blend of Memphis Soul and blue-eyed Soul, infused with the vulnerability that defines Wilson’s voice.

The album opens with 'A Small Word', featuring a bold brassy intro and a trumpet motif reminiscent of Alex Reece’s Pulp Fiction. Wilson’s evocative vocals shine alongside Charles Hodges on organ, Leroy Hodges on bass, and Steve Potts on drums, setting a captivating tone.

'Water' echoes the groove of 'Midnight Hour'-era Wilson Pickett, while 'Watching You Leave' introduces Gospel tones, with Wilson’s delivery evoking Sharleen Spiteri of Texas at her most impassioned.

A standout moment is the duet with Memphis Soul legend Don Bryant on 'What Kind of Love', where their voices blend seamlessly, creating a deeply emotional narrative.

'I'll See You in the Morning' brings a self-referential touch, recalling Wilson’s earlier phrasing on 'Mary Lou', showcasing her growth as an artist. The album closes with 'Since I Fell for You', a slow doo-wop-inspired ballad. The overall effect of the track is simply stunning, with Wilson’s delicate yet commanding delivery evoking the tender emotion of Roberta Flack.

'Memphis Calling' confirmed Wilson’s place as one of the UK’s most compelling Blues vocalists. Fans won’t have to wait long for more - her new album, 'A Spoonful of Willie Dixon', is set for release in April 2025.
