Geno Washington & The Yo Yos
Saturday 30th August 2025
Woodbridge Festival, Suffolk
Geno Washington’s return to Woodbridge, after being stationed here serving at the US Air Force Base in the 1960’s, was special to him, his band and the adoring audience. Indeed, Geno's long spanning almost legendary musical career started here. Now headlining the Woodbridge Festival, the organisers paid homage to this Soul and Blues man, given his special connection with this delightful town in Suffolk.
Among the Woodbridge and Suffolk folk present were also Washington’s followers, fans that had travelled far from other parts of the UK, as Geno’s set alongside his Yo Yos delighted this late Summer outdoor crowd. They danced, smiled and enjoyed. Suffice to say my dear school friend, who had relocated to Suffolk, and who came with her partner to see the band for the first time praised: “He is amazing! They are amazing!“ Indeed, you don’t get a better off the cuff, on the ground review than that!
Washington’s vocals were ably accompanied by Greg Lester on guitar, Steve Bingham looking cool in shades on bass and Geoff Hemsley, also shining in his reflective shades. The audience were treated to a set which mixed classics such as 'Cold Sweat', 'High Heeled Sneakers' and 'Got My Mojo Working'. There was also a treat for Blues guitar purists, as Lester (a top session guitarist) skilfully played an impromptu beer bottleneck slide guitar on 'Little Red Rooster', that added another dimension to this Willie Dixon classic.
Geno’s son Silky Washington then joined the band on hand held percussion on 'Feel It', before the band crescendoed with the crowd on 'Everybody Needs Somebody'. Such a special Summer soulful set with a feel-good fun vibe. What a memorable return to Woodbridge for Geno!
