Esprit D'Air
Wednesday 26th March 2025
The Electric Ballroom, Camden, London
The Electric Ballroom in Camden has long been a sanctuary for music lovers, a place where energy crackles through the air and unforgettable nights unfold. On this particular evening, Esprit D’Air took to the stage, captivating an adoring audience with a performance that was both technically masterful and emotionally stirring. Helmed by the band’s enigmatic and ever-charismatic frontman Kai, the show was a testament to the passion and resilience that has propelled Esprit D’Air forward over the years.
The critically acclaimed Japanese Rock Metal band, operates as an independent project under the sole creative direction of the ever-impressive Kai, who not only serves as the band’s vocalist and guitarist but also its driving force in composition, production, and management. However, the live experience is not a solitary endeavour. For this tour, Kai was joined by an exceptional lineup of trusted musicians who brought the songs to life in spectacular fashion: Jan-Vincent Velazco on drums, Takeshi Tokunaga on bass and Yusuke Okamoto on guitar. Their synergy elevated the performance, ensuring that every moment of the night was charged with both precision and raw emotion.
The evening unfolded in two stunning sets, the first of which opened with the unreleased ‘Silver Leaf’ from the highly anticipated ‘Aeons’ album. From the outset, the audience was entranced, drawn into a sonic landscape that seamlessly weaved between soaring melodies and crushing riffs. ‘Lost Horizon’ and ‘Grudge’ followed, setting a powerful tone before the ethereal ‘Shadow of Time’ washed over the crowd with its haunting harmonies.
A highlight of the first half came with ‘Stardust’, another unreleased gem from ‘Aeons’, which shimmered with its celestial soundscape. ‘Nebulae’ and ‘Zetsubou No Hikari’, the latter of which had only been released that very day, received rapturous applause, the audience fully embracing the duality of despair and hope embedded in the track’s DNA. The hauntingly beautiful ‘The Hunter’ and the brooding intensity of ‘The Abyss’ kept the momentum alive before ‘Glaciers’ closed the first set in stunning, glacial grandeur.
A special mention must also be made for the die-hard fans of the band in attendance. While there was still room to move around the back of the venue, the roars and cheers of the crowd were much more akin to a stadium or arena show. Each shout carried through the hall, fuelling the performance of the band. As my accompanying photos below show, interaction between the band and the audience was at a high, almost symbiotic in nature. Indeed, there are fewer signs at this level of the high quality performance in action.
Returning for the second set, the band wasted no time in reigniting the fire with ‘Starstorm’, a track that exemplifies their signature fusion of Metal and Electronic elements. ‘Ocean’s Call’ and ‘Dead Zone’ followed, each delivering intricate arrangements and soaring choruses that showcased Kai’s vocal prowess. ‘Ignition’ and ‘Aire’ continued the sonic assault, before Velazco took centre stage for an electrifying drum solo that left the crowd in awe.
The latter half of the set built up to a fever pitch with the relentless energy of ‘Tsunami’, ‘Shizuku’ and ‘Leviathan’, the latter a staple fan-favourite that sent waves of euphoria through the room. It was a triumphant sequence that left no doubt about the sheer talent and cohesion of the ensemble as they left the stage ending their set.
With the crowd chanting for more, the band returned for a well-earned encore. ‘Calling You’ was delivered with an emotive depth that resonated deeply, its melancholic beauty amplified by Kai’s impassioned delivery. The night reached its crescendo with ‘Guiding Light’, a song that encapsulated the spirit of Esprit D’Air - an ode to perseverance, hope and the unbreakable bond between the act and their fans.
As the final notes faded into the night, there was an unspoken understanding among those in attendance: this was more than just a concert. It was an experience, a communion between artist and audience, and a reminder of why live music remains one of the most powerful forces in our lives.
Esprit D’Air continue to carve their own path, unshackled by convention and fuelled by pure artistic integrity. With ‘Aeons’ on the horizon, it is clear that this is a band whose journey is far from over - and if tonight was any indication, their brightest days are still ahead.
The quartet continue their European tour over the coming weeks across the continent and aren’t to be missed.
